Quick Answer
Student visas are refused when officers are not satisfied you are a genuine student, can fund your studies, or will leave when the visa ends. The UK checks a valid CAS and funds held for 28 days, the US applies section 214(b), Canada checks your letter of acceptance, attestation letter and proof of funds, and Australia applies the Genuine Student requirement. After a refusal, read the reasons and fix them before you apply again.
Why do student visas get refused?
A refusal is rarely about one missing page. Each country writes its own test, but they all ask the same underlying questions: are you a genuine student, can you pay, and will you follow the rules of the visa?
This guide uses what each government says on its own pages. We do not quote refusal-rate statistics, because we could not verify them from an official source. The checklist below is built from the official requirements, so it applies whichever country you choose.
UK Student visa: what must be in order
The Immigration Rules for the Student route set out what a decision maker checks, according to GOV.UK. The most common areas to get wrong are:
- Genuine student: the rules state that "the applicant must be a genuine student" (ST 5.1).
- A valid CAS: the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies must come from a sponsor whose licence is still valid when your application is decided. The reference must be issued no more than 6 months before you apply, and a CAS already used in a granted or refused application cannot be reused.
- Money: you must show the outstanding course fees plus living costs for up to 9 months, and hold the money for 28 days in a row. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your application date, according to GOV.UK.
- Qualifications: you may be asked for the certificates or transcripts you used to get your offer.
- English: you must be able to speak, read, write and understand English, according to GOV.UK.
For the current amounts, read our guides on the UK student visa cost and the bank balance you need. The rules on funds changed for applications from November 30, 2026, so check the date you apply.
US F-1 visa: what does a 214(b) refusal mean?
A common reason for a US student visa refusal is section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. In plain terms, the officer was not satisfied that you will return home after your studies. The US Department of State says officers judge each case on its own facts, including your circumstances, travel plans, financial resources and ties outside the United States, according to travel.state.gov.
Examples of ties the State Department lists are a job, a home, and family and friends. There is no formula, so you cannot "pass" with a set document pile. What helps is a clear, honest answer to why this course, why this university, how you will pay, and what you plan to do afterward.

Canada study permit: what do officers check?
IRCC lists the documents for a study permit on its Get the right documents page. Gaps in any of these are where applications go wrong:
- Letter of acceptance: always required. Your school is asked to confirm it is valid, and if it does not by the deadline your application is returned.
- Provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL): needed in most cases. You usually get it from your school after you accept your offer and pay tuition, in part or in full. Quebec uses a CAQ instead.
- Proof of funds: always required, for you and any accompanying family members.
- Letter of explanation: optional but recommended. IRCC says to explain why you want to study in Canada and that you understand your responsibilities as an international student.
- Medical exam and police certificate: only if they apply to you or IRCC asks.
The funds amount changes, so check the current figure on IRCC's site before you apply. Our Canada study permit cap guide explains the attestation letter in more detail.
Australia Student visa: the Genuine Student requirement
For applications lodged on or after March 23, 2024, Home Affairs assesses a Genuine Student (GS) requirement, which replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant test, according to Home Affairs.
The application asks written questions, each limited to 150 words and answered in English. They cover:
- your current circumstances, including family, community and employment ties
- why you chose this course and this provider
- how the course will benefit you
- anything else relevant
- a further question if you have held a student visa before or are applying from inside Australia on a non-student visa
Officers also consider reasons for not studying in your home country or region if a similar course is available there, your immigration history, and whether the course has value for your future. Back your answers with evidence, such as transcripts, employment records and income documents.
You must also show genuine access to funds. See our guides on Australia student visa costs and funds and subclass 500.
Pre-application checklist for any country
Work through this before you pay any fee:
- Name matches everywhere. Passport, academic documents, offer, bank statements and forms should all show the same name and dates.
- A clear study plan. Be able to say in two sentences why this course, why this country, and what you will do after.
- Funds you can explain. Money should be documented from a clear source. IRCC warns that large deposits without evidence of where the funds came from are not treated as reliable evidence.
- Right timing. Hold funds for the required period (28 days in a row for the UK) and apply within the allowed window.
- Valid offer paperwork. CAS, letter of acceptance with PAL/TAL, or the document your destination requires, issued by an authorized school.
- Your own words. Write your own letter of explanation or GS answers. Do not copy templates.
- Honest history. Declare any earlier refusals. Do not hide anything.
- Consistent answers. If a sponsor pays, the sponsor's evidence should match what you say in the interview or form.

What to do after a student visa refusal
Do not reapply the next day with the same file. Read the refusal reasons first, then decide.
- UK: if you applied from outside the UK, you may be able to ask for an administrative review. GOV.UK says the window for applicants outside the UK is 28 days from the decision, the fee is ยฃ80, and it can take 12 months or more to get a result, according to GOV.UK. The review checks for caseworking errors rather than making a fresh decision. For many students, a new application that fixes the stated problem may be faster. Check your decision letter and GOV.UK for your options.
- US: the State Department says a 214(b) refusal applies to that application and there is no appeal. You can reapply with a new form, a new fee and a new interview appointment, and it advises doing so if you have additional information to consider or significant changes in your circumstances, according to travel.state.gov.
- Canada and Australia: we could not verify the official review or reapply rules on the government pages we could open. Read your refusal letter and the IRCC or Home Affairs page named in it for your options.
In every case, a new application should answer the refusal reasons with new evidence, not repeat the old one. Our UK student visa process guide and study in the UK page show what a complete application looks like.
