Quick Answer
Real routes for Nepali students include DAAD's Helmut-Schmidt Program and EPOS courses (both €992 a month, master's level, applied for at the course), the €300 a month Deutschlandstipendium (applied for at the university), and Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters. The Helmut-Schmidt deadline is July 31 each year. Each program sets its own window.
Germany scholarships for Nepali students 2027: the real routes
Germany has no single scholarship that every Nepali student can apply for. There are four real routes, and they work very differently:
| Program | Level | What it covers | Where to apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Program (public policy and good governance) | Master's | €992 a month, tuition exemption, insurance, language course | Directly to the master's course (up to two) |
| DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) | Master's, some PhD | €992 a month for graduates, plus insurance and travel allowance | Directly to the chosen course (up to three) |
| Deutschlandstipendium | Bachelor's and master's, not doctoral | €300 a month | At the university you attend or plan to attend |
| Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters | Master's | Full scholarships at some programs only | At the joint master's you choose |
Most DAAD funding is for people who already hold a first degree, so it is aimed at master's and PhD study, not bachelor's. Each program sets its own application window, so read the call for your chosen program before you plan anything. DAAD scholarship Nepal: the Helmut-Schmidt Program
The Helmut-Schmidt Program funds a master's degree in political science, law, economics or administration for future leaders from developing and emerging countries. DAAD's scholarship database lists Nepal as an eligible country. Here "country" means the country where you live and apply from.
The DAAD FAQ dated May 2026 says:
- Deadline: July 31 each year, and applications open June 1. That FAQ refers to the application round for 2027, so that round has closed. Check the new call before July 31 of the next year.
- Courses: the scholarship is offered only for the seven master's courses listed in the announcement. You send your application directly to one or two of them, not to DAAD.
- Money: DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of €992, a study and research grant of €460 each year, fixed travel allowances, and health, accident and liability insurance in Germany. Scholarship holders are exempt from tuition fees, but a registration fee must be paid each semester.
- Language course: a German language course in Germany, usually lasting up to four months, is mandatory, even though the master's courses are taught in English.
- Who qualifies: a degree with above-average results (upper third), a last university degree that is not more than six years old, and relevant practical experience (work, internships, volunteering or NGO work). You must not have lived in Germany or another non-developing country for more than 15 months at the deadline.
A 3-year bachelor's degree is not an automatic bar, but each master's course sets its own entry rules, so ask the course before you apply.
Fully funded scholarships Germany: EPOS postgraduate courses
EPOS (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses) is the other main DAAD route. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is built for young professionals from developing countries. Nepal appears on the DAC country list that DAAD publishes for this program.
According to DAAD's EPOS database entry and the 2026/27 program brochure:
- Level and money: postgraduate or master's study at a state or state-recognized university. DAAD pays €992 a month to graduates. Funding runs 12 to 42 months, depending on the course.
- Who qualifies: a bachelor's degree (normally four years) in a related subject, an upper-third result, at least two years of related work after your first degree at the time you apply, and a degree that is not more than six years old.
- Language: for English-taught courses, follow each course's rules. For German-taught courses, you need a current certificate at B1 or higher when you apply.
- How to apply: directly to the course, not to DAAD. You can apply to up to three courses.
Deadlines: DAAD's list for the 2026/27 intake shows that most application deadlines fell between mid-2025 and mid-2026, so that cycle is closed. DAAD's list for the 2027/28 intake sends you to each course's website for deadlines, and some courses admit only every two years. Open the course page for the exact dates.
Deutschlandstipendium: Germany scholarship for master's and bachelor's students
The Deutschlandstipendium is merit-based. It is €300 a month, with the federal government and private sponsors each paying half, and it is awarded regardless of income. According to the official FAQ, students of all nationalities and all subjects can apply if they are enrolled at a state or state-recognized university that offers it. Doctoral students are excluded.
You do not apply to a central office. Contact your university, or the one you plan to attend, and ask how its selection works. Support normally lasts at least two semesters and up to the standard length of study, and it is reviewed after each year. The official pages do not give one national deadline, so each university sets its own.
Treat it as a helpful top-up, not a way to pay for your whole stay. It does not replace the funds you must show for your visa. See our guides on the blocked account and on financial proof, sponsors and scholarships.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters and other funding
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are EU-backed master's degrees run by several universities in different countries. The Erasmus+ site says students from anywhere in the world can apply if they hold a first degree, or are in the last year of a bachelor's degree and will graduate before the master's starts. Programs involve at least three institutions from three countries. Some programs offer full scholarships to the best-ranked students, and some do not.
You apply directly to the program you choose, usually between October and January for courses starting the following academic year. Use the official Erasmus Mundus catalogue to see which programs exist and which include a German university. Each program's website sets the scholarship details.
DAAD's database also lists offers from other selected funding organizations. Select Nepal in the country filter to see what applies to you. For tips that work for any scholarship, read our guide to scholarship application mistakes. If you are also weighing the UK, see our guide to UK scholarships for Nepali students.
How to apply for a DAAD scholarship from Nepal: build a strong application
No guide can promise a scholarship, and DAAD selection committees decide. What the official DAAD pages do tell you is what they look for:
- Start early. Documents such as certified translations, employer letters and degree certificates take time.
- Check the rules for your course. Each course has its own entry requirements, language proof and extra documents.
- Write one clear motivation letter. For the Helmut-Schmidt Program, it is up to two pages, dated, and must explain your academic, practical, professional and personal reasons. If you apply to two courses, rank them and say why. For EPOS, link the letter to your current job and your development goals.
- Prove your language level. Get your English certificate, and German if your course needs it, before the deadline.
- Show real experience. Work, internships, volunteering or community service all count for the Helmut-Schmidt Program. EPOS needs at least two years of related work.
- Use correct documents. Include a dated CV, degree certificates, a transcript with an explanation of the grading system, and recommendation or employer letters on headed paper with a stamp.
- Send it to the right place. For both programs, the application goes to the course, not to DAAD.

Check before you apply
Checked in November 2026. Scholarship amounts, country lists and deadlines change by cycle. Before you apply, re-check:
- The current call and FAQ for your program in the DAAD scholarship database (select Nepal in the country filter).
- The deadline on the website of each master's course, because the Helmut-Schmidt and EPOS applications go to the university.
- Your university's own Deutschlandstipendium page.
- The Erasmus Mundus catalogue and each program's page for scholarship rules and dates.
This guide covers only facts we could confirm on official pages. We could not confirm a current monthly amount or a deadline for the Erasmus Mundus scholarships, so we left them out.
