Quick Answer
Check each scholarship's own rules first: Chevening asks for four essays of up to 500 words and two references, while the COMPEX 2026-27 notice lists no essay or resume and selects by computer-based test. For any essay, use specific examples, tie your plan to Nepal, get more than one review and start 8 to 10 weeks early. Most lost applications come from missed windows, eligibility gaps and form errors.
Start with the rules, not the essay
Every scholarship sets its own application, so check what it asks for before you write anything. Two schemes Nepali students apply to most show how different they are:
- Chevening (UK Government): four essays of up to 500 words each, on leadership, networking, studying in the UK and your career plan, plus two references. You need a bachelor's degree equivalent to a UK upper second class (2:1) or above, at least 2 years (about 2,800 hours) of work experience by the deadline, and you must be able to return to Nepal for at least 2 years after the award. The 2027/28 round closed on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 UTC.
- COMPEX (Embassy of India, Kathmandu): the 2026-27 notice lists no essay, personal statement or resume. Selection is through a computer-based test, you apply online yourself, and the fee was NPR 400.
Read the official notice first. If a scheme has no essay, a polished personal statement will not help you, and your time is better spent on marks, documents and the exam. Our guides cover each in detail: Chevening and COMPEX.
How to write a scholarship essay or personal statement
These points come from our Chevening guide and apply to most scholarship essays:
- Be specific, not generic. Instead of writing "I am a good leader", describe the situation, what you did and the measurable result.
- Use real examples from your own work and studies in Nepal. Panels read many essays, and concrete stories stand out.
- Connect your plan to Nepal. Many schemes, including Chevening, want to see how your study will benefit your home country.
- Answer the question each essay asks. Chevening's four essays each address one selection criterion, so do not reuse the same story in all of them.
- Stay inside the word limit and leave time to edit.
- Get more than one review. Ask colleagues or mentors to read it, because fresh eyes catch gaps you will miss.
- Start early. Four strong 500-word essays take time, so begin drafting at least 8 to 10 weeks before the deadline.
What to put in a scholarship resume
Where a scheme asks for a resume or CV, keep it factual and easy to check:
- Education: your degrees, institutions, dates and results. Some schemes work from percentages, so write marks as percentages where the form asks for them.
- Work experience with dates and responsibilities. Chevening's two-year requirement is strictly enforced, so you must be able to document each role, including internships, volunteering and part-time work.
- Achievements with results, such as a project you led and what changed because of it.
- Test scores and certificates that the scheme or university asks for.
- Referee details for two people who know your work well, if the scheme asks for references.
Keep every date and name consistent across your resume, essays and forms, because mismatches raise questions.
Common mistakes that cost Nepali applicants a scholarship
- Missing a short window. COMPEX registration for 2026-27 opened on August 27 and closed on September 10, 2026, about two weeks. Chevening does not accept late applications.
- Not meeting the eligibility rules. COMPEX set an age range of 16 to 23 on July 1, 2026 and minimum Class XII marks. Chevening needs the full two years of work experience by the deadline.
- Form and file errors. For COMPEX, photos must be 100 to 200 KB and signatures 80 to 150 KB in JPG or JPEG, you enter percentage marks and not grades, and no changes are allowed after you submit.
- Using an agent where the scheme forbids it. The Embassy accepts COMPEX applications only directly from the applicant.
- Choosing universities by ranking alone. Chevening wants to see that each course fits your goals.
- Writing vague, generic essays that could belong to any applicant.
Finding support and feedback
- Use the official help channel. For the COMPEX online form, the Embassy lists a help desk email, helpdeskcompex@gmail.com, open 10 AM to 5 PM on working days.
- Ask people who know your work to review your essays and resume, as above.
- Talk to a counselor. Admizz Education counseling is free for students, and our counselors can review essays and help you compare scholarship options. They cannot submit an application that a scheme requires you to make yourself. You can register for counseling.
- Compare more than one scheme. See our guides to scholarships for Nepali students, UK scholarships and international scholarships.
