Quick Answer
After a STEM degree, the US offers a 24-month STEM OPT extension (36 months in total), the UK Graduate visa is 2 years now and 18 months from January 1, 2027, and Canada's PGWP can reach 3 years. Germany allows up to 18 months to find a job after a German degree. Rules depend on your exact program.
What does study abroad for AI and STEM careers look like?
If you want a career in artificial intelligence, computer science, data or engineering, the country you choose matters less for the course name than for what the government lets you do after you graduate. Each main destination has an official route that lets graduates stay and work, and the length, the degree rules and the deadlines are different.
This guide covers only what official pages say for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany. It does not rank universities and it does not promise jobs or salaries. For the general comparison of work-after-study rules, read our post-study work guide. To see how the rules are changing through 2028, see our rule changes calendar.
Short version:
- USA: STEM OPT adds 24 months to standard OPT for eligible STEM degrees, for 36 months in total.
- UK: the Graduate visa is 2 years now and 18 months for applications from January 1, 2027.
- Canada: the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) can be up to 3 years, depending on your program.
- Australia: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) has streams by qualification.
- Germany: up to 18 months to look for a job after graduating from a German university.

USA: how does STEM OPT work for AI and computer science graduates?
F-1 students who earn a degree in certain STEM fields are eligible for a 24-month extension of post-completion OPT, for a total of 36 months, according to USCIS.
The fine print, according to USCIS and Study in the States:
- The degree must be on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. A course name with "AI" or "data" in it does not decide this. Ask your designated school official (DSO) to confirm the program's STEM designation before you enroll.
- Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify.
- You and your employer complete Form I-983, the Training Plan for STEM OPT Students. Your DSO needs it before recommending the extension.
- Timing: you can file Form I-765 up to 90 days before your current OPT employment authorization expires, and USCIS must receive it within 60 days of your DSO's recommendation.
- Unemployment limit: up to 90 days during initial OPT, plus an additional 60 days with the extension, for 150 days in total.
- One extension per degree. A second extension is possible only with a second STEM degree at a higher level.

UK: what does the Graduate visa offer a tech graduate?
The UK Graduate visa is open to all eligible graduates, not only STEM graduates. According to GOV.UK:
- Length: 2 years if you apply on or before December 31, 2026. 18 months if you apply on or after January 1, 2027. If you have a PhD or other doctoral qualification, it lasts 3 years.
- Who can apply: you must be in the UK on a Student visa, have studied a UK bachelor's degree, postgraduate degree or other eligible course, and your education provider must have told the Home Office that you completed the course.
- When to apply: before your Student visa expires. You do not have to wait until you have graduated or have your certificate.
- Work: you can work in most jobs, look for work, or be self-employed. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson.
The date you apply decides the length, not the date you start your course. Read our full guide to the UK Graduate visa from 2027.
Canada: which programs get a longer PGWP?
Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) depends on the level and length of your program, according to IRCC:
- Master's programs: you can apply for a 3-year PGWP even if your master's program was less than 2 years. This rule applies as of February 15, 2024 and does not apply to certificate or diploma programs.
- Programs of 2 years or more: you may be given a PGWP valid for 3 years.
- Programs of 8 months to under 2 years: the permit may be valid for up to the length of the program.
- Passport: the permit is issued only for the period your passport is valid.
Eligibility rules, according to IRCC:
- The program must be at a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution and at least 8 months long.
- Language: CLB 7 in English (or NCLC 7 in French) for bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. CLB 5 for college, polytechnic and other non-university programs.
- Field of study: the page states there are no field of study requirements for graduates with a bachelor's degree. For other university, college and polytechnic programs, graduates whose study permit application was submitted on or after November 1, 2024 must graduate in an eligible field of study linked to occupations in long-term shortage.
- Deadline: apply within 180 days of confirmation that you completed your program.
Because field rules differ by program type, check the IRCC field list for your exact program. For costs, read our Canada costs, GIC and PGWP guide.
Australia: how does the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) work?
The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) has streams that depend on your qualification, according to Study Australia, the Australian Government's international education site:
- Post-Vocational Education Work: for graduates of an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification linked to an occupation Australia needs. You can stay up to 18 months.
- Post-Higher Education Work: for graduates of a degree-level qualification or higher with an Australian provider. That page gives no fixed stay length for this stream. How long you can stay depends on your qualification and circumstances.
- Second Post-Higher Education Work: for graduates of a degree in a designated regional area.
Other rules on that page: you must be 35 years of age or under when you apply, unless an exception applies. You may need to have held a Student visa in the last 6 months and recently completed an eligible qualification in a CRICOS-registered course. You cannot change streams after you apply. Visa holders can work without a limit on the number of hours, subject to visa conditions.
We could not open the Department of Home Affairs pages, so we do not state a stay length for degree graduates. Check the Home Affairs page before you decide.
Germany: can you stay 18 months to find a tech job?
Germany does not have a STEM-only route, but its job-search permit suits engineering, data and computer science graduates who complete a degree in Germany.
- Length: after you finish your studies, you receive a residence permit for up to 18 months to look for a job, if you can prove your livelihood is ensured during this period. You may work during this period, according to BAMF.
- Who: the DAAD page applies this to non-EU graduates of German higher education institutions. It says you may hold any job to meet living expenses while you search for a qualified position.
- Relevant work: the Federal Foreign Office says you can extend your residence permit for up to 18 months to seek employment relevant to your qualifications, if you complete your studies successfully.

How to plan study abroad for AI and STEM careers
- Pick the pathway first. Decide whether you want the longest post-study period, the most flexible work rights or a country with a clear job-search permit.
- Check the exact program, not the field name. STEM OPT needs a degree on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Canada's rules differ by program type. Australia's streams depend on your qualification.
- Plan around the application date. The UK Graduate visa length depends on the date you apply (December 31, 2026 or January 1, 2027).
- Confirm the rules for your graduation year, not the year you apply to study. Rules change.
- Compare all your destinations on our study destinations page.
Checked in November 2026. Before you decide, re-check the UK Graduate visa length on GOV.UK, the PGWP field list on Canada.ca, the STEM list through your DSO and Study in the States, and the 485 stay lengths on Home Affairs.
