What Was Announced
The UK government says the Graduate visa will be set at two years for graduates of "high compliance" universities with strong labor market outcomes. The measure comes from the 2026 UK Budget and was made public on October 28, 2026.
The Graduate visa (Graduate Route) lets international students who finish a UK degree stay and work, or look for work, without a job offer or sponsor. Until now the route was two years for most bachelor's and master's graduates, and the government had planned to cut it to 18 months for applications from January 2027. This announcement would keep two years, but only for graduates of qualifying universities.
What Is Confirmed and What Is Not
| Question | Where things stand |
|---|---|
| Is the two-year visa kept? | Yes, for graduates of "high compliance" universities with strong labor market outcomes |
| What happens to other graduates? | The planned 18-month duration from January 2027 is expected to apply, pending the final rules |
| How is "high compliance" defined? | Not published. It is likely linked to sponsor compliance measures such as the Basic Compliance Assessment, but this is not confirmed |
| What counts as "strong labor market outcomes"? | Not published |
| Which universities qualify? | No list yet |
| When does it start? | No date given |
| Will visa or health surcharge fees change? | Nothing was announced on fees |
Treat any list of "approved" universities you see online before official publication as a guess.
Why It Matters for International Students
- Your choice of university now affects your post-study time. Two graduates with the same degree could receive different visa lengths depending on where they studied.
- Time to find a skilled job. The extra six months can be the difference between a first job offer and leaving the UK early.
- Sponsor compliance becomes a selling point. Universities with strong visa-refusal, enrolment and course-completion records are more likely to qualify, although the exact tests are unknown.
- Value for money. If you pay ยฃ16,000 or more a year in tuition, post-study work rights are a major part of the return.
What This Means for Nepali Students
Nepal is one of the larger sources of UK student applications, so universities that recruit from Nepal will be watching the final criteria closely. Until they are published, avoid choosing a university only because you expect it to qualify.
- Ask the university directly.Ask whether it expects to meet the "high compliance" standard and what its recent visa, enrolment and completion record looks like.
- Check its sponsor status.Confirm it holds a UK student sponsor license and is not under a Home Office action plan.
- Look at graduate outcomes.Ask for the share of graduates in graduate-level work or further study within 15 months of finishing.
- Do not delay a good course. If your course and funding fit, a strong match matters more than a rumor about one extra year.
Other Changes in the Same Package
The same Budget announcements, as reported, include:
- High Potential Individual visa: expanded from graduates of the top 80 universities to the top 150, with a proportional cap increase.
- PhD graduates: the discount to visa salary requirements for PhD holders is to be removed, following a Migration Advisory Committee recommendation.
- Global Talent route: more host organizations are expected to be added to the endorsed-funder pathway, possibly from spring 2027.
The government describes its aim as building the most pro-business migration system in Europe for high-skill workers while tightening routes for lower- and medium-skill roles.
How Universities and the Sector Reacted
Sector voices have given a cautious welcome. A Russell Group representative said it was encouraging to see the government recognize the benefits of international students. Reports say the Home Office and Treasury had not yet commented in detail, so the practical effect is still unclear.
