Do You Really Need IELTS?
Not always, but you do need to prove your English. For a UK Student visa you must show you can read, write, speak and understand English at the right level. For degree-level study that is CEFR B2. Below degree level it is B1.
"Without IELTS" therefore means using a different accepted way to show your level, not skipping English altogether.
Accepted Ways to Prove English
- Approved SELT: a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider.
- UK degree: a degree-level qualification taught in English and awarded by a UK institution, even if you studied outside the UK.
- Ecctis code: a degree from a non-UK institution that was taught in English can be assessed by Ecctis, which gives a code to use in your application.
- UK school qualification: GCSE, A level or similar English qualification started before age 18.
- University assessment: for degree-level courses and above, a university can assess your English itself, as long as it is equivalent to B2.
Who Is Exempt?
Citizens of certain countries, such as the USA, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, do not need to prove English. Nepal is not on the exemption list, so Nepali students must prove their English by one of the routes above.
Practical Alternatives
- Ask about a university English testSome universities offer their own assessment instead of IELTS.
- Check an Ecctis codeIf your degree was taught in English, this may remove the test.
- Consider a pre-sessional English courseA short course can raise your level before your main degree.
- Compare other secure testsPTE Academic and TOEFL are also widely accepted.
Pre-Sessional English Examples
If your English is slightly below a university's requirement, a pre-sessional course may be offered before your degree. The University of Huddersfield lists these 2026/27 online pre-sessional fees: 6 weeks ยฃ2,100, 10 weeks ยฃ3,500 and 16 weeks ยฃ5,600. The University of the West of Scotland also lists pre-sessional English courses.
