New Zealand Just Made It Easier to Stay After Graduation
On 29 May 2026, Immigration New Zealand made an official announcement that changes the post-graduation picture for thousands of international students. A brand new visa — the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa — will open for applications on 16 November 2026, giving eligible graduates six months of open work rights to find employment in New Zealand after completing their studies.
Alongside this, New Zealand is also extending eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa to include graduates who completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 — also from 16 November 2026. Together, these two changes mean that significantly more international graduates will now have a structured, legal pathway to remain and work in New Zealand after finishing their qualification.
What Is the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa?
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a brand new visa category specifically designed for international graduates who have completed a qualification in New Zealand but whose course level does not currently qualify them for the longer Post Study Work Visa. It provides a six-month window of open work rights — meaning you can work for any employer in any role — giving you time to find employment and, where appropriate, transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa for a longer stay.
This visa fills a significant gap in New Zealand's current post-study options. Previously, graduates with qualifications at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 who did not qualify for the Post Study Work Visa had no formal post-graduation work pathway. The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa changes that entirely.
Full Eligibility Requirements — Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
To be eligible for the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, you must meet all of the following requirements at the time of application:
- Qualification level: You must hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 that was studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand. The qualification must not be an English language, foundation, or bridging programme — these do not qualify.
- Does not qualify for Post Study Work Visa: This visa is specifically for graduates whose qualification does not make them eligible for the longer Post Study Work Visa. If your qualification already qualifies for the PSWV, you should apply for that instead.
- Minimum funds — NZD $5,000: You must demonstrate you have at least NZD $5,000 available to support yourself during the six-month visa period.
- Medical requirements: A valid medical certificate and/or chest X-ray may be required depending on your intended length of stay in New Zealand. Check the Immigration New Zealand website for the current requirements based on your country of origin.
- No previous STGWV or PSWV: You must not have previously been granted a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post Study Work Visa. Both visas are granted only once in a lifetime.
- New Zealand Scholarship holders: If your study was supported under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, you must obtain written approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Education New Zealand before applying.
- Application timing: Your application must be submitted within 3 months of your New Zealand student visa expiring. Do not wait — late applications will not be accepted.
Key Conditions — What You Can and Cannot Do
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa comes with specific conditions that all holders must understand before applying:
Post Study Work Visa — Eligibility Is Also Expanding from 16 November 2026
Alongside the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, Immigration New Zealand is simultaneously extending eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa to a new group of graduates. From 16 November 2026, graduates who completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 will be eligible to apply for the Post Study Work Visa — provided they meet all of the following conditions:
- Completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 studied full-time in New Zealand for the full duration of the qualification.
- Enrolled for the full duration — cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning (RPL) is not eligible. You must have completed the programme in its entirety.
- Hold a bachelor's degree — completed in New Zealand or overseas, with no time limit on when it was awarded. An International Qualification Assessment is not required for overseas bachelor's degrees, though Immigration New Zealand may check qualification authenticity.
The Post Study Work Visa for Graduate Diploma holders will be issued for the duration of time the student spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand — up to a maximum of one year. PSWV holders can support partners and dependent children for visitor, work, or dependent child student visas, making this a meaningfully more flexible visa than the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.

Key Dates — What Happens and When
How to Use This Visa Strategically
Six months sounds short — but if you plan ahead, it is enough time to secure employer sponsorship and transition to a longer-term visa. Here is how to make the most of it:
- Start your job search before you graduate: The most common mistake graduates make is waiting until their visa is approved to begin looking for work. Begin applying for roles in your final semester. By the time your Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is granted, you want to already have interviews underway or offers in progress.
- Target employers who are AEWV accredited: Not all New Zealand employers hold Accredited Employer status with Immigration New Zealand. When applying for roles, check whether the employer is on the accredited employer register — only accredited employers can sponsor you for the AEWV that extends your stay beyond six months.
- Understand the Green List: Certain occupations on New Zealand's Green List Tier 1 allow direct application for permanent residency via the Residence from Work pathway without a points test. If your qualification and intended role qualify, your post-graduation strategy should be shaped around this pathway from the start.
- Have NZD $5,000 ready before you apply: The minimum fund requirement must be demonstrably available at the time of your application. Do not leave financial preparation to the last few weeks before your student visa expires.
- Apply within the 3-month window — don't leave it late: The application must be submitted within 3 months of your student visa expiry. Processing takes time. Apply at the earliest opportunity after 16 November 2026 — not close to the deadline.
